Andrew Garfield has fully embraced his newfound identity as a "horse boy" thanks to the viral meme from his upcoming film, We Live in Time. The actor, 41, is leaning into the quirky fandom surrounding a carousel horse from the movie, and he showed off his enthusiasm by sporting a custom Levi's denim jacket featuring a small horse head patch while out in New York City on October 2.
Garfield’s playful nod to the meme reflects how he's come to terms with the unexpected popularity of the horse, which gained traction after appearing on one of the film’s posters alongside co-star Florence Pugh. Initially, Garfield didn’t expect the horse to capture such attention. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he shared that he noticed the horse but thought he might be the only one to do so.
He recounted, “I see this image and think, ‘Maybe I’m the only one that will notice this insane horse.’” After a six-day phone-free retreat, he returned to find that everyone else had indeed noticed the quirky horse image, with Stephen Colbert discussing it on his show.
Garfield later told PEOPLE that, despite the horse's meme status, the image of him and Pugh was quite beautiful. He acknowledged that while they were somewhat aware of the horse’s unique look, they didn’t fully grasp its potential internet fame at the time. “We knew these horses were freaky, but the image was striking. It felt like we were invading its poster,” he explained.
As a fun gesture, Garfield even gifted Colbert a T-shirt featuring a giant horse head to celebrate the film. He said, "I have a gift for you because I know you love this movie and you’re a big Florence Pugh fan."
We Live in Time will hit theaters on October 11 in limited release and on October 18 in wide release.
